A Yolk He’d Never Seen Red-back spin your old web once again Until you can spin no more Dizzied by deception You tumble to the floor Tangled in your old ways This time you have messed it up for sure Exposed for all to see you, naked Running for the door Spider bites do not heal over night Some infect while some decay And if you do not treat her carefully She might bite back And you’ll become the prey The Lyre bird she came along and she gave you everything She picked you up and flew you around the earth You gave her your promise Said that you were being honest But you weren’t being honest with yourself She caught you out Cracked your shell, and pouring out Came a yolk you’d never seen Ochre like your abdomen Whatever could it mean? Have you heard from your old rights and wrongs Or have you spun out of control? Pull yourself together and start a new Before you lose it all Before you lose it all Before you lose it all

I Want To Be Your Wife I’ll sleep in the bed that i’ve made Conform to role I’ve been given So shape me and mold me like clay And everyday you’ll awake to my face I’ll fill you with bacon and eggs Force feed you warm custard and cake Until you’ve all but doubled in weight For fifty years and them i’ll disappear Into thin air When your shoulder is cold I’ll fall asleep with my face to the wall Who said silence was gold Give me permission to speak Forgive me for being so bleak But smother me under the sheets Some truth for a smack on the cheek And with every waking kiss i’m in matrimonial bliss

about

Joe Mckee is an English born, Australian raised songwriter/human based in Los Angeles. This album was written and recorded over the course of a few years in a variety of locations: friends homes, an abandoned warehouse in downtown Los Angeles, a Marijuana plantation in Northern California and aboard a cargo ship crossing the North Pacific ocean. But primarily, it was recorded in a friends barn behind a house in L.A.

This set of songs is mostly about the birth of his surprise child with a virtual stranger, the death of his dearest friend and the events that ensued. He met his daughter the day he delivered his best friends eulogy. They’re about a number of different things actually, but the album is shaped by those two seemingly cataclysmic events.

They are peculiar little ear-worms that slowly creep under the skin. Live with them. Let them wiggle around your living room while you vacuum the dog hair off your rug or while you rearrange your sock drawer.

Joe McKee isn’t an American but he’s here now. He’s an alien. An Australian alien.

This album was recorded over the course of a few years in a number of locations. David’s Home, Chris’s studio, Ethan’s living room, MAMA gallery, my home, a marijuana plantation and a cargo ship crossing the North Pacific ocean, but primarily, in a little barn behind a house in West Adams by my generous and talented friend, Derek Brambles. He also mixed the damn thing. Poor chap. It was a drawn out process and I duped him into it like a snake.
I suppose you could say it was produced by Derek Brambles and myself, Joe McKee, but Derek pressed all the right buttons.
Early on in the process, I relied on the generosity of David Dennis, who kindly captured my guitar playing and voice on tracks 3, 6 and 7. Then my swollen-hearted friend, Ethan DeLorenzo recorded various bits and pieces, primarily on track 5. Somewhere amongst all of this, Chris Nelson and Branden Stroup captured my pal, Paz Lenchantin, playing her wonderful bowed instrument all over tracks 1, 2 and 6.
Eric Johnson sat on a stool, and upon first listen, played drums remarkably well on track 4.
Devon Geyer brought an ocean-load of wisdom and warmth, and proceeded to play piano on tracks 3, 7 and 8 as well as a bass guitar on tracks 1 and 5.
Kevin Mallory, mid-cyclone, unleashed his bloody fast fingers upon my unsuspecting piano (tracks 1 and 2).
Edan Frieberger, with deft precision, smiled a shiny beam of violas upon tracks 1, 2 and 6, also.
Shags Chamberlain, because he is my synth-wielding wizard-brother, splashed a healthy dollop of Moog all over tracks 1, 2, 3, 4, 8 and 9. What a good sport. He also mastered the record from his bed A.K.A. Studio Avenue 54.
Aslan Rife, appeared from nowhere and then disappeared, though, not before lending his supernatural abilities to track 6. He played drums, sang some backing vocals and played synth bass. He played a strong part in arranging those backing vocal parts too.
Jesse McGinty, at first from the barn, and then later from the comforts of his own home, blew into various woodwind instruments. A Saxophone sucked a strange sound from his mouth on track 5, Trumpet on track 8, clarinet on track 7 and flute on track 2.
And if you listen very closely and tilt your head to one side, you might be able to hear Brandon Addison playing the musical saw on track 8. All those other noises were probably made by me and all of it is for her: Juniper.

All song written by Joe McKee (Mushroom Music)
Rick Milovanovic designed that gorgeous artwork.
